Unifi vs. Eero for a Panama City condo

Most condo buildings in Panama City are poured concrete with rebar in every slab, which is brutal on Wi-Fi signal between floors and even between rooms on the same floor. I've run both Unifi and consumer mesh kits (Eero, Google Nest Wifi) in real units here, and the difference shows up fastest at the walls you can't avoid.

What actually mattered

  • Wired backhaul beats mesh hops. Any mesh system loses a meaningful chunk of throughput on a wireless hop through a concrete wall. Running even one Cat6 drop to a second access point outperforms two wireless mesh nodes trying to talk through rebar.
  • Per-room APs, not a single powerful router. A single strong router in the living room looks fine on a speed test standing next to it, and falls apart in the back bedroom.
  • VLANs for guests and IoT. Condo guests and smart-home devices don't need to be on the same broadcast domain as your work laptop.

Recommendation

For a rental or small unit where you can't run cable: a consumer mesh kit is fine, and easier to self-support. For anything you own or plan to be in for years, Unifi with even one wired backhaul run pays for itself the first week you're on a video call and the signal doesn't drop.

If you're setting up TIGO Más Móvil as your internet source, the same concrete-wall math applies to placing the ONT/router — closer to the center of the unit almost always beats "wherever the cable happens to terminate."
